CHARLTON – Main Street Studio has just announced a pop-up art show happening in a decommissioned volunteer firehouse currently being transformed into a fine craft gallery, studio and teaching space.
Titled “The Art of Wood Fire”, this show gathers the work of ceramics artists from across the Northeast, who make the trek to a twice-yearly firing of a wood-fired ceramics kiln, constructed by artist Dan Greenfeld on family property in Charlton, about 12 minutes drive from Ballston Spa.
Reverently named “Athena”, the two chamber climbing (or Noborigama) kiln is modeled after similar Japanese 17th century kilns and was completed in 2009. It has room for about 75 cubic feet of ceramics.
Wood firing of ceramics is unlike any other firing process. Ash drops down from above and lands on different surfaces that the artists create in their pieces. The clay takes on many different surface effects depending on the types of wood used, how the pieces are placed in the kiln, and even the outside weather conditions.
The gallery is located just down the road from the kiln, and tours of the kiln are being considered for those interested. Scheduling details for these tours will be posted on the Main Street Studio Facebook page and website as they become available.

Main Street Studio is located in the former firehouse of Charlton Fire District #1, at 786 Charlton Road, in Charlton, NY. Although not yet fully open to the public, the gallery is hosting pop-up events that celebrate our local spirit, craft, industriousness, and authenticity.
Main Street Studio is inspired by the notion that it’s always better to make than to buy, but when we do buy, we should try to buy small, and keep it local. Focused on this mission holistically, the studio seeks to create a place for our local community to learn to make, provide a space for making, and a shop to buy well-made, beautiful and useful items made in and around our community.
The show opens on Monday September 26th, and runs through October 7. The gallery space will be open from 1-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday & Sunday. There will be an Artist’s Reception on Thursday, September 29th, from 6 – 9 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artists and hear them talk about their work.
