The operator of a Weed lumber mill is investigating whether hot ash stored on its campus started a wildfire that killed two people and burned dozens of homes last week.
The Mill fire ignited Sept. 2 on or near the property of Roseburg Forest Products and quickly spread to the communities of Lincoln Heights and Lake Shastina, resulting in the deaths of two women, 66 and 73, according to the Siskiyou County sheriff. Authorities have not officially determined the cause of the fire, which was 75% contained Thursday after burning nearly 4,000 acres.

Women who were members of a Utah polygamous group say in a lawsuit that they were forced into underage marriages, raped and had to work as children in the group’s businesses. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in state court in Salt Lake City alleges the Kingston Group, also known as the Order, arranged such marriages so that girls would become pregnant and beholden to their husbands and the group. The lawsuit against group members seeks a jury trial and unspecified damages. John Gustafson, a representative of an organization affiliated with the Kingston Group, calls the claims “frivolous” and unlikely to succeed.

The Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a court order that would have forced Yeshiva University to recognize an LGBTQ group as an official campus club. The court acted Friday in a brief order signed by Justice Sonia Sotomayor that indicated the court would have more to say on the topic at some point. The university, an Orthodox Jewish institution in New York, argued that granting recognition to the group, the YU Pride Alliance, “would violate its sincere religious beliefs.”
The suits at Major League Baseball finally got one right, taking significant steps to speed up their dawdling game. If only they’d moved a lot quicker. Pitch clocks, limits on defensive shifts and larger bases were approved in one of the most significant days in the history of the national pastime. No question, these are all major adjustments to the rule book. Right up there with the designated hitter, the lowering of the pitching mound, and the outlawing of the spitball. MLB really had no choice, given an aging fanbase and dwindling interest from young people.
Augsburg goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz has saved an injury-time penalty and infuriated Werder Bremen fans as he preserved his team’s 1-0 win in the Bundesliga. The game ended with a threat of violence from Bremen fans who stormed from the stand to the advertising hoarding behind Gikiewicz’s goal after he put his finger to his lips and gestured in their direction following his save of Marvin Ducksch’s penalty in the fourth minute of injury time. Bremen players appealed to their supporters to stay put and referee Martin Petersen booked Gikiewicz for the alleged provocation. Ermedin Demirovic's 63rd-minute goal proved to be the winner.
A bill to rename Mishawaka’s Veterans Affairs Clinic after late U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski is headed to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. The bill passed the U.S. House last month, and Indiana’s two Republican senators, Todd Young and Mike Braun, introduced an identical version in the Senate, which unanimously approved it Thursday. The legislation would name the health center the “Jackie Walorski VA Clinic.” Walorski and two members of her staff died Aug. 3 when their SUV crossed the median of a highway in Elkhart County and struck an oncoming vehicle.

Planned Parenthood leaders from across the country are meeting in California to discuss how to defend abortion rights. Leaders from 24 states met Friday in Sacramento. Their goal is to create a blueprint for protecting abortion rights now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. The meeting comes as Californians prepare to vote on adding abortion rights to their state constitution. But replicating California's abortion rights successes in other states and at the federal level will be difficult. California is dominated by Democrats who support abortion rights. Congress is closely divided. Opponents of abortion have also mobilized nationally.
Oriol Romeu has scored late to give Girona a 2-1 win over Valladolid in a meeting of recently promoted sides in the Spanish league. Reinier Carvalho put Girona in front in the 21st minute. Valladolid’s Monchu Rodríguez equalized in the 38th with a shot from outside the area. Valladolid lost three players all to injury before Romeu scored the decider with two minutes to go. Romeu headed in the winner after Santiago Bueno used his head to knock down a free kick to the far post for his teammate to finish off. Girona rose into ninth place. Valladolid was left in 14th.
LOS ANGELES — The Buffalo Bills defeated the defending Super Bowl champion Rams 31-10 at SoFi Stadium in the first game of the NFL season Thursday night.
Lens defender Kevin Danso has led Lens to a 1-0 win against Troyes and the northern side moved to the top of the French league on Friday. Danso escaped his marker in the 39th minute and headed the ball home from a free kick. Lens created more chances after the interval but could not find a cutting edge. Lens is still unbeaten and moved a point above Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille. The latter two both have one match in hand. PSG hosts Brest on Saturday and Marseille plays against Lille at Stade Velodrome.
Holton Herta refuses to wonder if Sunday's season-ending race is his final IndyCar start for now. His name is thick in the Formula One rumor mill and an advisor to Red Bull says a deal is in place to make Herta the first American on the F1 grid since 2015. Herta says that was news to him and he's not considering his future plans until after the IndyCar season. Herta also says he'd prefer not to receive an exemption to earn the Super License to compete in F1. He'd like FI to put a heavier emphasis on IndyCar competition.

Federal prosecutors say they will not file civil rights charges against a Kansas police officer who shot and killed a 17-year-old in 2018. The Justice Department on Friday announced the findings of its investigation into the shooting death of John Albers at his home in Overland Park, Kansas. An officer said he shot Albers because he was afraid the teen would hit him with the minivan he was backing out of the family's garage. The Justice Department said it agrees with an earlier court finding that officer Clayton Jenison acted with unreasonable force. But investigators could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did so willfully, which is required to bring federal civil rights charges.

A man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens of others when he allegedly drove his SUV through a Christmas parade in Wisconsin last year withdrew his insanity plea Friday. Forty-year-old Darrell Brooks appeared in Waukesha County Circuit Court where he’s facing nearly 80 charges, including six homicide counts, in connection with the Nov. 21 incident in Waukesha. Brooks had changed his not guilty plea to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in June. After the announcement on the plea change, the defense asked that the jury status hearing for Friday be rescheduled. The judge agreed and pushed the hearing to Sept. 19.
The defense for R. Kelly and two co-defendants has rested at the R&B singer’s trial on charges of trial-fixing, child pornography and enticing minors for sex. They concluded their case Friday after the main defense witness, Kelly co-defendant and his former business manager Derrell McDavid, ended his three days of testimony. Prosecutors get a chance to call rebuttal witnesses and the sides would then deliver closing arguments. Jury deliberations aren’t likely to begin until next week. Kelly and McDavid are charged with fixing Kelly’s 2008 state trial by threatening witnesses and concealing video evidence. Both also face child pornography charges.

Major League Baseball is prepared to voluntarily accept the formation of a minor league union. It's a key step that will lead to collective bargaining and possibly a strike threat at the start of next season. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said the sport was in the process of notifying the Major League Baseball Players Association which launched the unionization drive on Aug. 28. The union told MLB on Tuesday it obtained signed authorization cards from the approximately 5,000 to 6,500 players with minor league contracts. The players’ association’s next step if MLB had declined would have been to ask the National Labor Relations Board to conduct an authorization election.

Authorities say a Dallas-area man was sentenced to 60 years in prison after he admitted to filming himself raping a 7-year-old girl. The U.S. attorney's office for the northern district of Texas said in a statement Friday that Mark Allen Miller, of Rowlett, was sentenced Thursday by a federal judge in Dallas after pleading guilty to two counts of producing child pornography. The 35-year-old Miller was arrested on Jan. 12 after the girl’s father, with whom Miller was staying, said he walked in on Miller raping the girl, who was 9 years old at the time. Prosecutors say Miller admitted to police that he had been molesting the girl for two years.

Meanwhile, Republicans are seeking reforms to the foster care system in the wake of these abortion debates. Democrats want to see improvements to sex education. But some Republicans are wary that this talk will be backed up with action when they return for a regular session this January.

A star witness who testified against others in the plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor wants a judge to reduce his prison sentence and release him from custody. Ty Garbin wants more than four years cut off his six-year sentence for conspiracy. Prosecutors agree that a break is justified, but they’re recommending only a three-year reduction. The decision rests with federal Judge Robert Jonker. Garbin has been in custody for about two years since his arrest in 2020. He quickly cooperated and pleaded guilty to conspiring to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Two other men were convicted but two more were acquitted. A sixth man, Kaleb Franks, also pleaded guilty and testified for the government.
