CUMBERLAND — The C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts invites the public to view an exhibition by Chuck Stump, showing pottery, and Jim Germaux, paintings, through Sept. 25. An opening reception will be held Sept. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Stump’s special interest is wood-fired and salt-glazed stoneware. He explores traditional glazing and firing techniques on his contemporary vessels. The richly textured and decorated forms are wheel-thrown with slab and coil additions. The patterns on the surfaces of his forms are enhanced by the subtle, natural effects of the wood ash and salt glazing.

Stump earned his bachelor’s and Master of Arts degrees at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and taught art in Allegany County schools for 30 years before retiring in 2010. He has exhibited his work throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. He works out of his studio that includes gas, oil and wood-fired kilns near Frostburg.

Germaux spent his youth in Pittsburgh and has been a resident of Frederick for over 30 years, where he recently had an exhibition at NOMA Gallery. He is an abstract painter known for his use of bold color and elegant line. He’s an avid hiker and fly fisherman and draws inspiration from the nature around him, be that hiking the Appalachian Trail or wading the Yellow Breeches while casting to a rising trout.

The Gilchrist museum is located at 104 Washington St. and is open Fridays through Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum is available for rental for special events.
