The sleepy village is surrounded by meadows and woods - the perfect escape

The beautiful county of Berkshire has so much to offer in its quaint villages and bustling towns. Each place is unique and is steeped in so much history - some are worth a visit.

Whether you want to mooch about a town or go for a relaxing country walk, there is a place for everyone to visit. One village nestled near the Berkshire Downs is only four miles from Newbury and bares quite the history.

The small village of Frilsham may not look much to some but there is more to it that meets the eye. It is surrounded by woods and meadows and lies along the valley of Pang - boasting panoramic views of rolling countryside.

It houses a village hall, an independent school called Harriet House School, a heritage preservation site, and is well known for its pub/restaurant called The Pot Kiln. The Pot Kiln Country Club has won numerous accolades and boasts incredible views and outdoor dining.

Muddy Stilletos says that the gastropub is a favourite of Kate Middleton and Pippa Middleton when they visit home in Bucklebury to see their mother and father. The menu at The Pot Kiln focuses a lot on red meat and game.

St Frideswide church dates back to the 12th century and is named after Princess Frideswide. It is one of just three churches in the country named after this saint.

A local legend says that the church is on the site of a pig sty in which the princess fled from a Mercian prince in the late 7th century. David Nash Ford's Royal Berkshire History states: "Presumably the local swineherds had made good use of the old ruined temple. Frideswide hid there for some time, sustained by a nearby well, still pointed out today.

"When this lady's pursuer eventually caught up with her, she prayed for deliverance and the prince's eyes popped out! She miraculously restored them upon a promise that she would thenceforth be left alone."

The village is also home to the 48-acre Coombe Wood, a fun play park and three farmhouses which are all Grade II listed buildings - all of which date back from the 16th century. Why not take a trip to the village and go for a walk?
