Specialty materials firm Arkema announced plans Wednesday to build a $150 million anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) production plant in North Carolina as part of a new long-term supply agreement with agricultural company Nutrien Ltd.

The 40 kt/yr facility will be constructed a Nutrien’s site in Aurora, NC. Arkema will recover fluoride from phosphate used in Nutrien’s production processes and process it into AHF.

AHF produced in Aurora will be used by Arkema’s Calvert City, KY plant to produce high added value polymers and fluoro-derivatives.

“This innovative investment is the first of its kind in the United States, and is perfectly in lione with the group’s new climate plan as it reduces overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions,” Arkema said in a release.

Arkema’s new facility in Aurora is slated to become operational in the first half of 2022. The new asset will enable the company to reduce its use of mined fluorspar.

“Beyond its favorable impact on the environment, the partnership offers other important benefits,” the company said. “In a context of growing tensions regarding mined fluorspar and AHF supply, it aims in particular to secure the supply of AHF at a stable and competitive price, and support the constant development of new applications, notably for batteries, 5G electronics, and water treatment.”

Powder & Bulk Solids reported this week that Arkema completed the sale of its Functional Polyolefins business to SK Global Chemical. The transaction was based on an enterprise value of €335 million, or about $374.7 million. Arkema said the deal is part of a company effort to focus on its Specialty Materials business.
